Add active bookmarks to your browser

Now there's another way to use a search engine from wherever you are on the web, using a bookmark button.

This page explains how to add an active bookmark button to your browser.
Note: this will likely only work with version 4 and higher of Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator.

The original idea for this came from xrefer it!. They're really froody guys!

Add the button: Add one of the links below to your Personal Toolbar
xrefer it!
go Google!
go Citeseer!
go DMOZ!
ask Jeeves!
search Altavista!
search Britannica!
search Searchopolis!
search Delphion! (for patents)
Babel translate English to French!
Look up RFCs
How do I do it?
  1. Right click on the text in one of the grey boxes above which reads 'xrefer it!' or 'go Google!' or whatever and choose 'Add Bookmark for Link' from the context menu.
  2. Select Communicator menu > Bookmarks > Edit Bookmarks
  3. Drag the bookmark which begins 'javascript … ' and drop it in the Personal Toolbar folder.
  4. Rename the bookmark by right clicking it and choosing 'bookmark properties'.
  5. After you have confirmed your choice of name, you may return to the main browser window, and your button will be ready to use. I personally have a Search folder of bookmarks, and all of the above within that folder, which is very convenient!
Try it out: Highlight text on any web page and click the xrefer it! button or the Google button

Here are some searches to get you going:

spam

history is bunk

French Revolution

Alternately: just click on the active bookmark button and it will prompt you for the search string and hence save loading the empty original page for the search engine.

If you have any problems with this, or if there is some other search engine you'd like a bookmark button setup for, by all means, sent me email (see my home page).

If any javascript experts out there know how to automatically set the bookmark title when you right-button, please let me know!
